This weekend BC started with the adoption questions. First on Saturday, he asked, “what adoption mean?” We’ve discussed this before, but I know that he’s only three and he’s going to have questions. So I told him, “Well, first FM and FD had you, and then you went to live with AL and CL and then you came to live with me and dad.”
The next day, the question was, “how old I was when I was adopted.” I told him he was two. This started a whole line of questioning about his age. It seems he was thinking that if he was two when he was adopted, he must still be two because he’s still adopted.
The next day, he asked if uncle LC adopted him. So, I tried to explain that J and I adopted him and that makes uncle LC his uncle. I don’t think he really understood it.
As I mentioned, this isn’t the first time we’ve talked about adoption, but I think it is the first time he’s asked about it. That was one thing I was dreading when I first found out we’d be adopting a toddler. I didn’t expect that we would have kids this young. I had assumed that they would be older and would remember their adoption. I thought that we would talk about adoption, but that I would never have to explain the concept. I’m sure this is just the beginning of many more questions.
