I’ve been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 15 years. When people hear that I’m a vegetarian, they often want to know if J and the kids are as well. And the answer is, definitely not!
I do most of the cooking in our house and about half of the meals that I serve are vegetarian. Thankfully, J is not a “meat and potatoes” kind of guy and eats just about anything. The kids were used to eating a lot of junk food when they first came to live with us, so I considered it a small victory just to get some plants into their diets.
Like many kids, they love cheese, bread, and sweets. As far as meat goes, they love chicken, so that’s the most common meat in our house. BC has really expanded his diet. He’ll try just about anything. We’ve found that he enjoys tuna sushi, tofu, hummus, and all kinds of fruit. It doesn’t really matter to me if my kids become vegetarians whent they’re older, as long as they eat healthy. But, if any of them becomes a vegetarian, I predict it will be BC. There’s not much hope for BE :)!
She still loves her junk food and really resists trying new food. She’s also very fickle. One day she loves raisins, the next day she hates them. The other day, she told me wanted to be a vegetarian like me. She says that occassionally and I take it with a grain of salt. Usually I say, “maybe when you’re older.” This time I didn’t get to answer before she said, “no, I like chicken nuggets too much.”
