DPS: We’re In

Yes, it’s true, BE is now a Detroit Public Schools (DPS) student. This past week, she started second grade at one of the city’s many application schools. Despite what many people hear, some of these application schools rival the suburban schools. BE had to apply and test to be admitted to her school – read more about DPS application schools on the DPS Web site.

BE spent kindergarten and first grade at a suburban school and although her experience was not bad, I definitely had my share of complaints. As a parent, I had a mediocre experience. It’s too early to tell what BE’s DPS experience will be like, but I have high hopes. So far, I’ve been impressed with the principal and her teacher, both of whom seem very engaged and accessible. I’ll continue to write about our DPS experience throughout this school year – and hopefully into the next!

  1. We are in, too! My girls go to one of the application schools as well! We live in the suburbs (Livonia), but couldn’t ask for a better setting for them. The teachers are wonderful, caring, and excellent at their job. Which school did you pick? We are at the Academy of the Americas, a dual-language immersion program. I am the art teacher there and have never been happier with a school.
