When I was a kid, I couldn’t wait to grow up and be independent. BE, on the other hand, loves being a kid and has no desire to grow up. Sometimes adults will ask her what she wants to be when she grows up and she always says she doesn’t know. At 6, I don’t expect her to have her life planned out, but it seems like most kids can respond to this question with “kid appropriate” answers such as teacher, policeman, or firefighter. I’ve never pushed her to give an answer, but I’ve always wished that she would have something to say. I want her to enjoy being a kid, but I also don’t want her to think that being an adult is scary. Lately I’ve been spending 10 minutes or so talking quietly with the kids before they go to sleep, and the other day, BE told me that she wanted to be a teacher. I hadn’t asked her, but we were talking about school and it just came out. I was so happy to hear it, but I just responded with “that’s a good idea.” I don’t really expect her to become a teacher, but I’m also happy that she was thinking about the future in a positive way.
A teacher is good!
I agree!
